The Lightest Tablets on the Market

July 12th, 2017 | Posted by rreeve in Rental | Tablet - (0 Comments)

If you are getting a tablet rental, you are probably doing so because you need a device which is compact, easy to use, and lightweight. There are a whole lot of tablets out on the market, and depending on whether or not you will need a specific operating system for your event, there may be a whole lot of tablets for you to choose from. One way to narrow down your search for the perfect tablet rental is by searching through tablets by weight. Since having a tablet which weighs five pounds isn’t very practical in most occasions, this article is dedicated to showing you some of the lightest tablets out on the market – or specifically tablets which all weigh under one pound.

Sony Xperia Z4

A picture of the Sony Xperia Touch.

The Sony Xperia Z4 is large but light, weighing less than a pound in both WiFi only and WiFi + cellular data variants. The Xperia has the largest display size in this article, coming in at 10.1 inches. If you are interested in this device, keep in mind that it runs on Android so if you have software which requires iOS, consider the next tablet on the list.

iPad Mini 4

A picture of several iPad Mini 4s

While Apple’s new iPad Pro is quite powerful, it weighs in just over one pound so I couldn’t put it on this list. However, if you need a lightweight iOS device the iPad Mini 4 may suit your iPad rental needs. The Mini 4 comes equipped with a 7.9 inch retina display and weighs .66 pounds for the WiFi only model and .67 pounds for the WiFi + cellular data model.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 9.7”

A picture of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

Weighing in at .95 pounds on the WiFi only variant, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 narrowly squeezes into this article. The S3 boasts a 9.7 inch Super AMOLED display. Samsung has been testing around with some new ideas with their tablets, and the S3 comes with a stylus called the S Pen and can also be coupled with a keyboard.

HP Pro Tablet 608 G1

The HP Pro Tablet 608 is what some might dub an “oldie but a goodie”. The 608 released back in 2015, but it is one of the only Windows tablets that I could find which weighs less than a pound. The 608 comes equipped with a 7.86 inch display and a version of Windows 10.

iOS 10’s Hot New Features

July 5th, 2016 | Posted by rreeve in Apple | iPad | iPhone - (0 Comments)

Last month Apple announced that iOS 10 will be releasing this fall and unveiled many of the bells and whistles which will accompany the operating system upon its release. Apple announced 10 new features for iOS10 which they thoroughly delved into during their presentation at the Worldwide Developers Conference, but we can give you a basic rundown of what iOS 10 will do for you.

New Looks

Apple has decided to update several visual aspects of your device with the release of iOS 10. Some fancy new graphics you can look forward to seeing include a redesigned lockscreen and a heavily improved Messages app. Improvements for the Messages app include videos sent inside messages can now be seen and played inside of the Messages app, and emojis will be displayed 3 times larger.

More Interactivity

iOS 10 is heavily focused on improving user experience through interactivity. To improve user interaction Apple has done a number of things. Most notably, Apple has opened Siri for developers, meaning you should expect some of the top apps, such as Twitter or Instagram, to start integrating Siri into their design. Apple has also taken several much smaller steps to ensure an increase in user interaction, including:

  1. More notifications for the lockscreen and more things to do in apps from the lockscreen
  2. QuickType can help you complete your messages in a more timely manner.
  3. The Homekit app will now have house accessory support for accessories like security cameras and doorbells.
  4. Your device will now be able to show you where you’ve taken your pictures on a world map, and will also be able to sort people into individual photo albums through facial recognition.
  5. Apple News will present you with articles based on articles you have already read.

Higher Quality of Life

Apple has also announced several quality of life improvements which will release alongside iOS 10.Two such improvements are a redesign of the Apple News app and transcripts for voicemail messages. Apple plans to clean up the news app’s interface and give it easier to sort categories.

Mobile devices change and get better almost on a daily basis. This is one reason why Apple’s iPad sales have really been suffering lately. New stuff comes out that is better and cheaper, and phones are getting so big that people really don’t need tablets as much as they used to.

This is why Apple decided that they were going to refresh their line of iPads. They were going to revamp them and make them something awesome that people would be excited to buy again. But there is something that is really odd to me… If iPad sales are really that bad and they keep trying to find new cool things to add to them and make people buy them again, why is the new iPad mini the exact same thing that it has always been?

Specifications

If you look at the specs, it’s really confusing and laughable. It has the same exact 7.9 inch 2.048 x 1,536 display that last year’s Retina Mini had. Don’t get me wrong, it still looks good and everything. It looked good last year too though. What is the point?

That’s not where it ends though. Lots of new processors have come out in the past year. Even all of the Apple stuff got processor upgrades. So it is really surprising to see that the new iPad mini has the exact same A7 chip that last year’s model had. It runs at 1.27GHz and has 1GB of RAM. So it performs well in most situations, but there really isn’t anything to get excited about. Even the new iPad Air got an A8 chip and 2GB of RAM, which is a pretty good upgrade. So even if Apple decides to put out another version of the iPad Mini a few years from now, it’s probably only to get about as good as the current iPad Air anyway. I’m literally not even seeing one reason to upgrade yet.

The Big (Mini) Picture

If you are in the market for a small tablet, there really isn’t anything WRONG with the iPad Mini. It can get pretty much anything done, you can surf the web and play games flawlessly, check your email, and anything else. The whole point is just that they have been selling the same thing for years, and they seem like they don’t understand why their sales are suffering. Maybe the general public has caught on to the fact that there are other companies who actually put current technology into their devices, and that the name “Apple” doesn’t make your device any better. I don’t really know, but I do know that this was an overall very poor effort on Apple’s part.

ipad4There have been a lot of rumors about Apple this year. The next several months could potentially be a make-or-break period of time for them. Things are supposed to be crazy with the release of the iPhone 6. According to some reports, there may even be multiple versions of the smartphone that drop at the same time.  Photos and reports of the next installment of the iPad Air have also been leaked.

As far as tablets go, Apple has always been on top. From the moment they launched the original iPad, the whole market has been wrapped around their finger. The only problem that Apple faces now is the fact that almost every company in the world has decided to make their own variation of the tablet, and there isn’t much left to do. Apple needs to find a way to bring excitement back enabling them to capture the market all over again.

According to new reports from Bloomberg, Apple is working on a brand new iPad that is going to have a display much larger than any that we have ever seen before. On the market currently we have iPads that are 9.7 inches and the iPad mini tablets that are 7.9 inches. According to Bloomberg, Apple has been working on an iPad that will have a 12.9-inch display that could be released as early as next year. The report cites a lot of sources that have proven to be pretty credible in the past. They say that the company has been working on this project for well over a year with their suppliers.

This news is coming at a time when things are already pretty exciting for Apple fans. We have been smothered by all of the news and rumors surrounding the much anticipated release of the iPhone 6. It is supposedly coming out in a 4.7-inch version along with a larger 5.5-inch version. That is scheduled for launch on September 9th. Apple is really trying to dominate the mobile market in general right now.

The best thing about putting out a larger iPad is the fact that it has potential to re-light the spark that once surrounded the iPad. Sales have been suffering  in comparison to previous years. Consumers would rather upgrade their smartphones than upgrade their tablets. You can’t really blame them. But by giving us an iPad with a 12.9-inch display, it may give consumers a real reason to think about upgrading from their old iPad.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAn iPad with a larger display could also prove to be quite handy in the office. The company has been trying to expand their business into the world of enterprise. Along with offering a larger, more useful and productive iPad, they will also be offering businesses iPhones and iPads that come preloaded with enterprise specific apps. This could also be a huge move for the company.

475762777For all of you out there that have to wear glasses, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to sit back and read a book or surf the web on your tablet without wearing them? As it turns out, pretty soon you will be able to. With new technology, screens will be able to correct vision problems.

The technology is going to be able to change the way images are displayed on a screen based on your glasses’ prescription. The screens will use different algorithms along with light filters to do this. Each pixel will be changed, and when the light passes through little holes in the screen, it will reach your eyes in a way that makes the image sharper for you as if you were either wearing glasses or had perfect vision. This can also work for people that can’t be helped with glasses. Even those who have physical defects that distort their vision could benefit from this technology, which is incredible.

There have been a few other companies that have attempted to create products like this before, but it has never really worked out to the extent that these new screens are going to. Brian A. Barsky, a computer science professor at Berkely, is working on this along with researchers from MIT and Microsoft. They are going to present a research paper at the International Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques that explains the whole project.

The next step is to figure out how to use this technology to create a product that real life people can go out and buy and use on their own. There are still a few obstacles left to overcome, but the team is confident. At the moment, only one person specifically would be able to use the product based on their needs and their needs alone. But they are working on being able to make a product that has settings that can be changed and used by multiple people and shared.

thin-tabletIt’s always suspenseful watching a fight among two giants play out. It’s almost like watching your favorite sports teams duke it out. You may be wondering how? Think of it like this. Every large electronics company is competing for one thing; your dollar bill. They want to out do their competition and be the best. It’s all a competition and it always will be. Some people are “fan boys” and “fan girls” as well. Basically, they favor one brand over the other. If we are looking at the two top tech giants out there, the two names that should immediately pop up are Apple and Android. Each of these brands has a huge following and it should come as no surprise that they are still competing. Apple has usually dominated the ranks, but recently Android has been making a comeback.

iOS has always been on top since the release of the first iPad years ago. They have owned the market and with little to no effort. It was always the top operating system when it came to tablets. Not just with tablets though. Mainly any mobile device was using an Apple iOS software system. Android decided to come back and fight however, and has since made its name in the mobile market digging into the sales of the iPhone. Android hasn’t stopped at the phone market though, they decided to go for the tablet market as well, and no their persistence has paid off.

A report from Gartner has shown some pretty incredible numbers for Android. In terms of tablet sales for this previous year, Android took the crown over any other operating system. Not only did they increase their numbers, but they did it by a huge jump. In 2012, Android saw only 53.3 million units sold. In only a years time, 2013 would show Android an increase in numbers by more than half! The numbers for last year show Android at 121 million units sold. Mind you these are global sales, but that is still quite the increase. With numbers like this in just a yearly increase, and Android continuing to push the market in their favor, they are well on their way to knocking Apple out of their way.

Having said that, Apple is still at the top in terms of it being a single manufacturer. Even so, seeing Android jump may be a bit nerve-wracking to the company. Apple did see quite the jump in tablet web usage in Canada and the US however. Any victory is a victory, whether it be large or small.

Now comes the question of if Apple should really be that worried. What many people need to consider is that, this is just tablet operating systems and nothing more. Not to mention the fact that Android OS’s are spread over a multitude of different platforms, where as iOS stays strictly on Apple products. Since Android and sell their OS to other products, it’s much easier for them to gain headway in the market. While, yes you can see the OS’s switch with a bit of reprogramming, it is not very common. It’s all just a matter of deciding which OS is better for you. If you are on the fence about who you should be throwing your money at, try renting a tablet with iOS and a table with Android to see which suits you better!

Android gaming hasn’t been taken too seriously so far. It is mainly limited to a few neat games you use to kill time during car rides. Recently, new Android “Console” devices have been popping up, like the MadCats Mojo or the Ouya Gamestick. These are two of the most recognizable Android gaming devices, probably because they are some of the only ones that exist. But, as CES 2014, a new tablet/Android gaming console was revealed. The Snakebyte Vyper…. and it is definitely an interesting Android device!

This new device has much more to offer than other similar gaming devices. The Vyper is a 7 inch tablet with a dock that lets you connect it to your TV. This allows you to play games and stream them directly to your television. The tablet has a 1280 x 800 resolution, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of memory. It has two cameras, a rear 5MP and a 2MP front camera and is powered by a 1.6GHz quad-core processor.

The Snakebyte Vyper comes with the tablet, dock , and an AirMouse controller. The AirMouse resembles a standard remote control that would come with your TV. Either way, it’s really neat and usable, but there is the option to upgrade and buy the $49 gaming controller upgrade that seems much more logical. The interface of the Snakebyte is very organized, coming with different categories for movies, games, music, and everything else. So if you were to download a movie, you would have a much easier time finding it.

The dock that comes with the tablet is L shaped and has slots for the tablet to slide into. The gaming controller looks like a mixture of the new Xbox of Playstation controllers, with standard joystick and D-pad, then the 4 other buttons on the other side, and also the trigger buttons.

The Snakebyte Vyper is a great little device that covers everything from a standard tablet to Android gaming on the big screen. The standard package is $199.99, and with the upgrade controller that puts the whole package at $249.99. This is a great choice for a serious gamer looking to take the Android experience to the next level. Play on the go, or play at home, and get all of your business work done at the same time
