Comparing Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 to iPad Pro

February 10th, 2021 | Posted by Robert Beagle in Android | iPad | Rental | Samsung Galaxy Tab | Tablet

Released in late August 2020, not many have had the chance to get their hands on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7. With a price and specs to compete with Apple’s iPad Pro, here we discuss price, design and display, software, hardware, and how Samsung’s latest Galaxy Tab compares to various iPad Pros.

Design and Display

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 has a similar appearance to Apple’s iPad Pro. Available in 11” or 12.4” size, this rivals the iPad Pro which comes in 11” or 12.9”. The S7 has an aluminum chassis, sports a small camera stack, and a magnetic strip for the S-Pen on the upper-left side. The S7 also comes with a quad-speaker setup by AKG. The S7 models come in bronze, black, and silver.

Despite the iPad having a larger camera bump, it looks remarkably similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S7. Both 11” and 12”+ models support a 120Hz variable refresh rate and built-in fingerprint sensors. While the Galaxy Tab S7’s 11” has 2,560 x 1,600-pixel resolution, the iPad Pro 11” displays a similar 2,388 x 1,668-pixel resolution. The larger tablets are similar as well, Samsung’s 12.4” displays at 2,800 x 1,752 pixels while Apple’s 12.9” has a 2,732 x 2,048 resolution.

With both tablets exhibiting their own unique display choices like camera placement and color choice, it’s fair to call this round a tie — which is kind of a win for Samsung to finally be in competition with the iPad Pro.

Hardware

Samsung’s latest Galaxy Tab S7 comes packed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ chipset, which delivers the fastest speeds you’ll find on an Android tablet. Although it comes with two options: 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage or 8GB of RAM with 256GB of storage, both of Samsung’s new tablets support up to an additional 1TB of external storage with a microSD card. Although we can’t give Samsung the win in this round solely based on expandable storage, they definitely have the leg up because it’s well-known that Apple refuses to allow its users to have the same option, although the iPad Pro does come available in 128GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options while running the A12Z chipset with 6GB of RAM.

When it comes to battery capacity, Samsung wins again. The Tab S7 has an 8,000mAh capacity battery, while the S7+ has a 10,900mAh battery — both support 45W fast charging with an optional power adapter.

Although the iPad Pros pack a 7,812mAh battery (11”) and a 9,720mAh battery (12.9”), iPadOS has more efficient power management capabilities. Both Galaxy Tab S7s and iPad Pros should be able to last most of the day between charging. Finally, the iPad Pro also comes with an 18W charger that supports fast charging, but Apple does not disclose the maximum power input.

With more powerful storage options and a more powerful chipset, it’s hard not to give Apple the edge when it comes to hardware.

Software

The Samsung Galaxy S7 comes with Android 10 along with the Samsung One User-Interface (UI). The latest update to Samsung’s One UI offers some useful features like automatic syncing across devices and integrated sync with Microsoft OneDrive, OneNote, and Outlook. Although Android 11 is available on certain Android devices already, Samsung has announced that it won’t update the Galaxy Tab S7 models until March 2021. Android 11 would bring a number of improved privacy, chat, and notification features.

Apple has always been known for its smooth, sleek user-interface — and nothing has changed. Coming standard with iPadOS with regular updates guaranteed, the iPad Pro’s operating system offers features like automatically converting handwriting to text, improved widgets, and an updated search and menu function.

Although there are some novelties to using a Galaxy Tab S7 that you won’t find in the iPad Pro, Apple still edges out the competition due to its more refined operating system, tight security, day one updates, and guaranteed operating system updates for at least a few years.

Cameras

The duo of Samsung Galaxy S7 tablets features a dual-camera stack with a 13MP primary lens and 5MP ultra-wide sensor. The front-facing camera clocks in at 8MP.

On the iPad Pro, you’ll find a larger camera bump than the S7 with a 12MP primary lens, 10MP ultra-wide lens, and a LiDAR scanner. The front camera has a 7MP sensor and TrueDepth camera for Apple’s Face ID.

The LiDAR scanner is used to determine the distance around objects and improve distance-measurement accuracy. Perhaps the key to Apple’s monopoly on the smartphone camera market, Apple’s iPad Pro has superior integrated camera technology in its flagship tablet — giving Apple the edge in the camera department.

The Winner?

The verdict is: there is no clear winner. The better tablet here depends on your needs. If you’re looking for a device to take your creative career to the next level or want a powerful laptop-replacement, an iPad Pro is your best option. Apple offers a more-refined OS, more options for creative applications, and the popular Magic Keyboard.

However, if you’re more interested in being as productive as possible, you might look into a Galaxy Tab S7 or S7+. The latest Galaxy Tab offers an amazing Super AMOLED display, plenty of RAM for multitasking, 5G options, and the ability to sync Samsung’s productivity apps with Microsoft Office.
